LAWYER'S PLAY

As of 2025, the primary fundraising and awareness raising event that the Foundation undertakes is the "Lawyer's Play” in partnership with the Players de Novo.  This is an opportunity for the legal community to put on an amateur theatre show, typically in early May.

The first annual event took place in 2006 at the Arts Barns.  The Players de Novo then sought a bigger venue and partnered with the Foundation to have the play performed at Victoria School in the Eva O Howard Theatre. The Foundation takes on the post-show reception, and funds raised are split between the Foundation and a theatre-company partner that supported the production.

The Foundation portion (around $25,000 annually) was initially intended to be used purchasing needed theatre equipment. The Foundation has successfully leveraged Alberta Culture matching funds towards those ends on three occasions by planning multiple years at a time.  It was also determined that the Lawyer’s play funds could also support master classes, and/or other arts equipment needed by the school, once theatre needs were satisfied.
